Zero Carbon Habitat: The Batimat 2011 Lab

Editions des Halles presents a modular wood-home prototype. Located at the center of this 6-day event, this is the opportunity to follow-up on the wood industry's desire to answer the environmental preoccupations of construction.

With the support of France Bois Forêt (French Wood Promotion Fund)

The Prototype

The aim of the Zero Carbon Habitat is to prove that, today, one can build and live all while drastically reducing their carbon footprint.

In these times of urban densification and the desire to optimize real-estate resources, the Zero Carbon Habitat delivers simultaneously an economical and environmental answer, two dimensions that are often hard to conciliate.

A researched conception

The modules can be designed to fit various applications. Different installation propositions are in fact being studied, among which the design conceived by interior architecture and design agency « Autre Territoire » (ie: An Other Territory) that already proposes several different residential or work-space finishings.

All of the components that go into the Zero Carbon Habitat have been carefully studied so as to guarantee a sustainable, responsible home.

This way, the Zero Carbon Habitat offers an exception laboratory in the field of eco-conception for the french and international construction professionals present à BATIMAT 2011

At the heart of BATIMAT 2011

The latest french heating and insulation regulation will come into effect by the second semester of 2011. The organizers of BATIMAT have thus decided to insist this year on building's energetic efficiency and performance.

The presentations of the Zero Carbon Habitat prototype is in sync with these objectives.

Within the module, a staged presentation will illustrate the solutions allowing to reach a neutral carbon balance.

A demonstration of how the implication of men and women of the building industry generate evolutions in this field will be taking place through meetings and interviews on location.

A collaborative initiative for partners involved

The Zero Carbon Habitat prototype is supported by active partners from the private and public sector; France Bois Forêt, France's leading wood promotion fund, is already on board. The project will allow industrial players, manufacturers and businesses to present, in a real-life situation, their solutions to reducing the carbon footprint of construction.

The local dimension and the use of timber; Zero Carbon's foremost assets.

The fight against global warming implies drastic reductions of green-house gases.

Timber used as a building material naturally stocks carbon and actively contributes in this effort.

Reducing material transport and subsequently making a better use of our local natural timber resources is another step towards making this demonstration a successful one. As for contractors, they can volunteer for an official carbon footprint evaluation by the ADEME, France's official environmental protection and energy efficiency agency.

Only by respecting all of these important points will we be able to deliver a neutral carbon-balanced construction.
